The discussion of child hunger on the site tonight has me agitated - our corrupt government, care-nothing conservatives, do-nothing liberals - they all really piss me off. A couple of days ago, I described how I feel when I get angry, that I honestly don't like me when the dark side shows. There is an additional factor, though - I'm always on guard about whether a period of agitation represents a VERY feared manic episode coming back. That has to be the greatest fear of someone who is bipolar, even though it only takes ONE manic episode in your life to give you the diagnosis. Now, one hasn't happened since December of 1999, but it's just something that sticks with me.
Now, what are we going to DO about these children?
Jesus, as I get ready to finish this, La Elu is pointing out what the TV droning in the other room is talking about, some nouveau riche assholes spending $200,000 to redo their kitchen. Where are our priorities?
Mizpah.

The rich have too much money and should be taxed high enough to carry their share of the burden of society. Liberals and leftists do not have any political power at the moment as the country is run by extreme Right-Wing lunitics and moderate Republicans (Democrats). There will be little or no change until their is a meaningful change in the power structure, and this is unlikely to happen in the near future no matter which group of conservatives hold office-though there is no question that the moderate Republicans (Democratic Party) are preferable to the Right-Wing lunitics.
Every problem has a solution, it may be extremely difficult or seemingly near impossible to find, but that is not reason enough not to try and fail, try and fail, try and fail, until the correct answer is found. The number of inquiries and length of time is unimportant.
Fatalism, conservatism, Religion, greed, etc. all pursue a course of inhibiting or even attempting to stop searches of this kind. One must brush them aside.
Donate food regularly to your local food shelves, and always vote to "spread the wealth".

I try to do something about the poverty in my own back yard because I feel like it is something that I can actually do something about. I feel completely powerless in the face of world hunger. What's the saying? Think globally. Act locally.
Having said that: Every last one of you supposed librerals and compassionate conservatives put together a bag of non-perishable foods and see if your local shelter can use it (they probably can). Here at the shelter where I work, our pantry is EMPTY! That has never happened here before. Usually, we get overrun with donations during the holidays or Temple Bethel shows up with a truck full of food. That didn't happen this year. Every day, I answer between 5-10 calls from people who can't pay their rent, utilities, whatever because they're out of work, or they used to make 30+k a year and now they work at Staples (oh wait! that was me!).
But, the economy is great. Really. It is.
The answer is simple, so simple many don't think it works. All you have to do is make a difference in your own life, in your own world. Set an example. Effect those around you, they inturn will make a difference in their lives and so on. The Ripple Effect. Pay It Forward. That's where it all begins. With you.
Example?
5 yrs ago I wanted to start a Holiday Toy Drive at my hospital inconjunction with the county-wide program run by local law enforcement agencies every year. I proposed the idea, it met with no real support, so I said fine, let me give it a go, even if all we do is collect one single thing, we will have made a difference...
Over time things grew. This year we helped 175 families collecting over 700 toys. We collected for the Fire Dept as well for their Bike Drive, while two businesses and one elementary school started their own toy drives as off shoots of the one we run. The one I alone started years ago. These days I get a lot of support, the new Admin supports it, and people want to know what they can do to help.
That's all it takes Roger, one person, one idea. Don't just say it, show it, and others will be sure to follow.
